THE RANGE SAFETY PLAN

GENERAL RULES

May 30, 1997

Purpose

The Range Safety Plan establishes protocols to assure the safety of the Range, provide a means for participants to know what is expected, and maintain security.

Modifications occur as needed by Club Officers, with sign-off sheets required to maintain range access.

Key Personnel

Chief Range Officer

Has complete authority; shooters must comply with instructions. Equipment inspections permitted.

Range Officers

Command the firing line with full authority. Must enforce safety protocols: barrels up — bolts out of gun if possible to and from firing line.

Scorekeeper / Line Judge

Maintains scores and ensures compliance with safety practices.

Range Monitoring

Required when more than two people shoot.

Shooter Eligibility

Club members and guests (with adult supervision) permitted. Non-members allowed during scheduled events with adequate officer supervision.

Safety and Conduct Requirements

  • Loud or abusive language will not be permitted
  • Eye and ear protection mandated; eye protection required for pin shoots
  • No alcohol or illegal drugs
  • No shooting at living creatures
  • A person has the duty not to shoot if he/she has any physical or mental condition that would impair judgment

Permitted Equipment

Rifles, pistols, revolvers, shotguns, muzzleloaders (no full automatics). Specific sight types, slings, jackets, and gloves approved.

Ammunition Restrictions

No tracers allowed. Pin shoot shotguns require minimum #4 buckshot.

Range Maintenance

Competitors must police firing points after matches, removing cleaning patches, empty boxes, brass, etc.
